“SLEEPING POLICEMAN” - A New Song By Me.
I just finished writing another song today. Its title is inspired by a tour guide I had while vacationing in Belize this winter. When asked by a tourist whether Belize had traffic cops to apprehend speeders, she replied by pointing to one of the many giant humps in the road and referred to it smilingly as a "sleeping policeman". I liked that.
SLEEPING POLICEMAN
pardon me sleeping policeman
outstretched across the road
would you like another donut
as your arteries corrode?
do you think you’re slowing traffic?
or did you need somewhere to sleep?
ineffectual enforcement
nary a shred of peace to keep
the missus kicked you out again - those swiss cheese alibis
wholly illuminate the evidence of yet another just one last high
yeah sure we’d all feel far more sorry for you if you’d fall farther down
to sleep in the street is no great feat when you’ve slept with the whole town
but now back to what’s important
as the rain it soaks you through
you’re the most ironic speed bump
stopping everyone but you
still there’s no doubt you’re not done yet
with rungs of hell left to explore
the less you lose the more it tricks you
that it’s a hell you can endure
the missus misses the idea of you - if you love her let her let you go
she’s handcuffed chained in freedom’s reach - they say you love the cage you know
co-independent tendencies tend to seize the love gone wrong
as something still worth saving when for years the love’s been gone
if the paperboy should come ’round
just before the rooster crows
don’t be shocked by today’s headlines
it’s the gutter that you chose
hope that someday standing upright
becomes an option once again
until then sleeping policeman
all that’s left to say is when
